Chesapeake Bay Fish

Chesapeake Bay Fish

The Chesapeake Bay is known for having some of the best fishing in the world. It has a variety of fish available year round. It is linked to the Atlantic Ocean. It runs all the way up into Maryland. This makes it one of the best body’s of water for fishing. On Finao Sportfishing Charters,we take advantage of being located directly on the Chesapeake Bay. It allows us to fish all year round for many species.

Chesapeake Bay fish migrate into the Bay during different months of the year. They come to spawn. Most fish move according to three things. That is water temperatures, day lengths, and moon phases. We start the season in January. We have one of our most popular fish moving into the Chesapeake Bay at that time, which is Striped Bass. These fish will stay in the Bay until the water temperature gets below 42 degrees. They feed on Menhaden and American Eels.

In March and April we start getting a few other fish. They now are mixed in with the Striped Bass.As the water temperature rises, Tautog and a few Red / Black Drum mix in. These two species feed off of Blue crabs.

They can be found along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel and the Eastern Shore. May is one of the best times of year to target Chesapeake Bay fish. This is because its a mix of the colder water fish moving out and the warmer water fish moving in. The Striped Bass and Tautog will be moving out and Cobia will be arriving. Cobia are here all summer long and one of our most known fish in the Chesapeake Bay. On Finao Sportfishing we target that species on most of our fishing charters. When the water temperature rises into the 70’s, we start seeing Spadefish, Sheepshead, Trigger Fish, Shark, and many other species. Throughout the Summer and into late September most of these fish will be around.

They will be available for us to catch on board our fishing chargers. Once the water temperature begins to drop below 70 we start to see a change in the Chesapeake Bay fish. Early October the Striped Bass begin to make their way back into the Bay to begin there spawning season. Red Drum also make a short appearance for about 1 month. They appear along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in October. When the water temperature drops into the low 60’s we begin to see Speckled Trout and Tautog. This temperature usually happens early November into Thanksgiving. When the water temperature drops back into the 50’s the main target species that we target on our fishing charters will be Striped bass. This will run all the way into the New Year.
